Sometimes, you just need to talk with someone. Need. That’s a powerful word. It means it’s not “nice to have” or “sort-of good”. It’s essential. That’s why a core component of caregiver support programs is to offer some type of emotional support. Receiving emotional support helps us cope with daily problems, stress, disappointments, or pain and makes us feel happier and more resourceful to deal with the troubles of life (Atoum & Al-Shobul, 2018).
Caregivers have, in general, extra responsibilities, adding more to an already full life. On top of those responsibilities is another element: the emotional impact of a changing relationship with the person you’re caring for. There are many feelings, including grief or sadness, guilt, anger, frustration, resentment and of course love and hope. Some call caregiving a “roller coaster”, for good reasons. Your emotions go up and down. Left to fester as inner turmoil, emotions can interfere with your ability to cope. Eventually, they come to the surface, quite possibly in a negative and unwelcome way. So, one way to take care of your emotional well-being is to talk it through.
In B.C., there are many local caregiver support programs along with our provincial Caregiver Support Line. When you reach out, what can expect from a trained caregiver support specialist?
- They will listen, with empathy and non-judgement.
- They will walk alongside you if you want to explore ideas for action.
- They will give information if you ask for it.
- They will understand the context of caregiving and acknowledge your challenges.
What Caregivers Say About Talking It Through:
- “The person I spoke to was so compassionate, understanding, and helpful! I felt so much better after my call, informed, and empowered.”
- “They not only listened to my journey, but connected me to a support group, and also asked many great questions to become yet more informed. They asked the hard questions too (ones that need to be asked): Are you ok? How are you doing”. Very much appreciated.”
- “I recall four things: being heard, empathy, kindness and access to helpful resources.”
