Caregiver Tips for Isolation

March 23, 2020

In these challenging and unprecedented times, caregivers can feel even more isolated and alone than ever before and may be feeling overwhelmed by trying to navigate your loved one’s care while looking after yourself. We have created some tips for caregivers during these times however please remember that our caregiver call line is toll-free if you feel you need to reach out at 1-877-520-3267, Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm. You are not alone.

1. Stay Connected

Stay connected with friends and family. Set up weekly phone calls with friends so you have something to look forward to. Use technology if you can, such as texting, email, FaceTime or Google Hangouts to stay in touch and even see your loved ones! You can use video calls to play games, read stories together, or just see a familiar smile.

2. Get moving

Exercise and movement is important especially during times of stress. If you are able to take a walk within your own neighbourhood, try to get out, while maintaining social distance. If getting outside is not possible, try some indoor exercise and if movement is challenging, you can try something like gentle chair yoga such this one we created for you here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjYOByVI-JU

3. Find new activities & hobbies

Keeping your mind busy is very important. Take some time to detach from watching the news and social media by trying a new activity, or pick up an old one. Some ideas include reading, drawing or trying a new recipe. Give yourself a project to complete so you have a goal.

4. Express your feelings

These are challenging times and there are a lot of different emotions that go with that. Allow yourself to feel and acknowledge these by writing them down. Journal your experience and thoughts and reflect on how you are navigating these current challenges.
