Equipment and helpful devices/aids to daily living—Island Health

Adaptive devices and equipment supports the independence of older adults as they carry out their activities. Small items like button fasteners to large equipment such as hospital-style beds help compensate for some of the changes aging can bring and make life safer as well. Look in the yellow pages under Medical Equipment and Supplies; some stores also rent equipment.

Adaptive clothing is available that simplifies the dressing process for people with arthritis, dementia, MS, Parkinson’s and stroke, and wheelchair users. Wide and extra-depth footwear is also available

○ Silvert’s Specialty Clothing 1-800-387-7088 offers the largest selection in Canada. Call or email for a catalogue which is also on the website

There may also be a seamstress/tailor in your community who can adapt existing clothing. As well some sewing patterns for adapted clothing are available.

Red Cross Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP) is a national program of the Canadian Red Cross, that provides health equipment loans to individuals dealing with illness or injury, providing aids such as: bath seats and benches, bed handles, commodes and toilet seats, crutches and canes, walkers, wheelchairs and other durable medical equipment. HELP empowers people to live more independently, and also plays an important role in the diversion of used equipment otherwise destined for landfill. In BC, the HELP Plus program augments the short term loan program by providing delivery and installation of advanced equipment such as beds and lifts. (Note: If you have unused health care equipment in good condition, please consider donating it to HELP.) Contact Information for HELP program locations in BC:
