About the Event
The Caregivers Connect Celebration is a special-edition of our Caregivers Connect support group, offering caregivers an opportunity to enjoy fun and reflective activities, including easy and accessible mindful chair movement and creating a time capsule. Participants are invited to bring a piece of stationary and an envelope to this virtual event.
Mindful Movement Class Description
Every movement of every day is a dance. Discover your body’s innate ability to move as physiotherapist and Continuum dancer, Shelly Yu, leads you through a 20-minute somatic approach to dance. By drawing attention to the body’s physical sensations and responding through movement, we will explore the mind-body connection and create dance through thoughts, emotions, and memories.
About Shelly Yu
Shelly Yu is a Neuro Physiotherapist with special interests in Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy and other chronic diseases. She is also an Education & Support Services Coordinator at Parkinson Society BC, and the Advocacy Officer at the Canadian Physiotherapy Association’s Global Health Division. Shelly’s main focus in healthcare is equity and access to care, especially for those living with chronic conditions. Outside of her clinical work, Shelly is a dancer in Continuum, a modern dance company based in the Lower Mainland. She uses dance to find grounding and mindfulness in her busy life.
Journaling/Time Capsule Exercise
As we care for loved ones, we become very attuned to their voices. Yet in meeting the needs of each day, we can lose track of the inner voice that is essential to our own well-being, and our resilience in challenging times. In this journaling exercise, Pamela L. Alexander will lead you through practices to spark questions within yourself like, “What do I need?”, “What is important to express?”, and “What would I like to create in my life?” Through simple self-loving practices in speaking softly, hearing ourselves, and writing by hand, we take time to remember the small, still voice within.
