First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) www.fnha.ca is the first province-wide health authority of its kind in Canada. In October 2013, the FNHA assumed the programs, services, and responsibilities formerly handled by Health Canada’s First Nations Inuit Health Branch – Pacific Region. The vision is to transform the health and well-being of BC’s First Nations and Aboriginal people by dramatically changing healthcare for the better. The First Nations Health Authority is part of a unique health governance structure that includes political representation and advocacy through the First Nations Health Council, and technical support and capacity development through the First Nations Health Directors Association. Collectively, this First Nations health governing structure works in partnership with BC First Nations to achieve shared vision.
The First Nations Health Authority plans, designs, manages, and funds the delivery of First Nations health programs and services in BC. These community-based services are largely focused on health promotion and disease prevention – such as:
- Primary Care Services
- Children, Youth and Maternal Health
- Mental Health and Addictions Programming
- Health and Wellness Planning
- Health Infrastructure and Human Resources
- Environmental Health and Research
- First Nations Health Benefits
- eHealth Technology
FNHA work does not replace the role or services of the Ministry of Health and Regional Health Authorities. The First Nations Health Authority will collaborate, coordinate, and integrate respective health programs and services to achieve better health outcomes for BC First Nations. Each of the health authorities in BC has an Aboriginal health team that leads the work for the health authority in developing and implementing its Aboriginal Health Plan:
- Fraser Health
- Interior Health
- Island Health
- Northern Health
- Vancouver Coastal Health
- Provincial Health Services Authority
As well the Aboriginal Health Directorate maintains strong partnerships with the regional health authorities to support improved Aboriginal and First Nations Health in B.C. Taken from: www.fnha.ca
