Include Patients and Family Caregivers as Partners
and the move to Patient and Family Centered Care
One third of family caregivers are in distress.
We don't feel heard. We're overworked...and under supported.
Family Caregivers are essential to the health care system. We provide 80% of the care! Yet, we're often not recognized or included as a partner in care.
What is a partner in care?
It's a shift in the way health care providers interact with people who care for their family members and friends. Willing caregivers are included in care planning and work with health care providers to provide relevant information and make arrangements for things like picking up medications and assisting with future appointments.
How will this happen?
There are 3 main things health care providers can do to work with family caregivers.
- Identify us. Ask "are you caring for a family member or friend?"
- Refer us to resources like Family Caregivers of BC to receive emotional support, information and resources, education and more.
