Virtual Support Circle: Visit Restrictions in

Long-Term Care during COVID-19

 

Caregivers of people living in long-term care homes may experience stress, anxiety, sadness and grief. Recognizing and acknowledging the feelings you are experiencing can help you to manage how you cope with this stressful situation. In this support circle we will share information and resources with family caregivers as partners in care during this state of emergency to contain the

COVID-19 pandemic.

When: Wednesday, Nov. 25th from 2-3:30 pm (occurs the last Wednesday of every month). You must pre-register to join each session!

Virtual Caregiver Support Groups

 

Our Caregivers Connect: BC’s Virtual Support Group (offered on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month from 2-3:30pm), brings people from across the province together around a mutual experience of caregiving for a family member or friend. This is a time for reassurance, where caregivers can realize they are not alone. The next support group is on Nov. 26th.

And, the BC Men's Virtual Support Group (offered on the 2nd Tuesday of every month from 7-8:30 pm) for men to come together to connect, receive support and share experiences as caregivers. Our group is led by experienced facilitators. The next support group is on Dec. 8th.

Peninsula Support Group (in-person)

 

Exhausted? Stressed? Not getting enough help? No time for yourself? Feeling alone, at times discouraged? If you are saying yes to any of the above, you might find comfort in sharing some of your stress with other people living with similar situations. Join us in a safe environment where the goal is to help lighten your load and share possible solutions. Give yourself a short break where you will find support and relief.

When: Nov. 27th, 1:30-3:30 pm (4th Thursday of each month)

Where: Shoal Centre, 10030 Resthaven Drive, Sidney in the All Purpose Room (1st Floor)

Pre-registration is required during COVID times and can be done by contacting our facilitator, Marlene Schlotterbeck, via email at mars47@icloud.com or by calling 250-744-4012.

Please, note that the SHOAL Centre is having a “soft” opening. They are following the mandate of the Provincial Health Officer and the Town of Sidney Emergency Operations Centre. Please, call 250-656-5537 for more information regarding their COVID safety protocols.

Victoria Virtual Caregiver Group

 

Our monthly Victoria Virtual Caregiver Group brings caregivers from the Greater Victoria area together around a mutual experience of caregiving for a family member or friend. This is a time for reassurance, where caregivers can realize they are not alone. This group is facilitated by our volunteer Bonnie Davoren.

When: Dec. 2nd, 1:30-3:00 pm (1st Wednesday of each month)

Katrina Prescott, a Vancouver-based Caregiver shares her process and strategies for continuing safe home care during a pandemic. This group is intended to foster discussion and thoughtful curiosity around care support during this challenging time.

Lake Country Health’s Caregiver Group

Exercise Class

 

At Lake Country Health, we are providing a FREE one-hour long Caregiver Group Exercise Class, held once per week on Thursday mornings at 10-11 am for participants of our Caregiver Support Program. 

This is an opportunity for physical activity, social connection, a break from caregiving and of course, fun! Following all current Covid-19 protocols, participants enjoy listening to good tunes, a warm up, cardio exercises and resistance band exercises and finally a stretch with deep breathing.

The care recipient is welcome to join in an adjacent room to spend time with a trained volunteer.

‘Taking Care of Your Health’ - Online Workshop Series in Punjabi for Older Adults & Their Caregivers

 

DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society’s Newcomer Family & Friend Caregiver Program is hosting a webinar series for Punjabi-speaking caregivers: ‘Taking Care of Your Health’

DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society is hosting group information workshops in Punjabi for caregivers on topics related to the health care sector. These include a series of virtual workshops facilitated by a Fraser Health guest speaker in the month of November.

Dates: Online Zoom sessions will be held on Tuesdays, November 17, 24 and December 1, 2020

Seniors & Caregivers Social Cafe

 

Abbotsford Association for Healthy Aging is holding a monthly Social Cafe for family/friend caregivers & seniors at Abbotsford Exhibition Park’s Gallery Room through to December.

The remaining get-togethers will take place on November 20th and December 18th from 10 am to noon. The Social Cafes include refreshments, music, crafts and games. Their November Café will also include an information session on Advance Care Planning from Fraser Health.

All the necessary precautions are in place – including sanitizer, distancing and masks – for participants to use COVID-19 safe practices, as per provincial guidelines.

The purpose is to give caregivers and seniors an opportunity to visit, meet new people, participate in activities and get out in a safe environment.

‘Medication Safety for Older Adults’ Workshop

 

'Medication Safety for Older Adults' workshop is being hosted by the BC Centre on Substance Use 'Thrive Program' for family/friend caregivers & facilitated by the Canadian Deprescribing Network! It will be held on November 30th, 2020, from 12:00pm - 1:00pm on Zoom. Participants can register beforehand by using the link below.

This virtual workshop will:

  • Explain why aging makes us more sensitive to the effects of medication
  • Identify situations in which the risks of harmful effects of medications outweigh the potential benefits
  • Describe the steps patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals can take together to prevent harmful medication effects
