Injury Prevention for the Family Caregiver

August 18, 2020

  • Handout 1
  • Discussion from Webinar

In an instant, your whole world can change. Your family member suddenly can’t fully weight bear, you bend, you twist, you support and you somehow manage to protect them from injury but what about you? Caring for a disabled or aging family member can be physically demanding, with caregivers often putting the needs of their family ahead of their own. But what happens if you find yourself unable to provide the level of care you once did? What happens if you are injured? What then? Who is going to be able to step in and replace you?

In this webinar you will learn:

– How to reduce the risk of injury while providing care to a loved one by identifying high-risk postures that can lead to back, shoulder, elbow and wrist injuries.
– How you can make a few simple adaptations in how you move, lift and transfer, so you can significantly minimize the risk of strains that can render you unable to safely provide care.
– How to recognize early warning signs, so you can change how you do a task, seek out alternative approaches or ask for help before you injure yourself
